Interprète d’exception, inspiratrice de nombreux compositeurs – de Meyerbeer à Saint-Saëns -, Pauline Viardot (1821-1910), remarquable pianiste, élève de Liszt, partenaire de Clara Schumann et admirée par Chopin, a laissé une œuvre beaucoup moins anecdotique que sa trop timide postérité pourrait le laissait croire. Outre de nombreuses mélodies, elle composa cinq opéras de salon (accompagnés au piano) dont les trois premiers sur des livrets de son compagnon le romancier Ivan Tourgueniev. Son ultime ouvrage, ce Cendrillon d’une veine plutôt légère que présentent les étudiants du Conservatoire de Paris, est révélateur des qualités de cette musique où les italianismes se mêlent à la clarté d’un esprit très français.
