L’œuvre, un « conte de fée en quatre actes » sur un livret d’Henri Caïn est adaptée du conte de Perrault qui a inspiré, entre autres avatars, La Cenerentola de Rossini. Mais, quand ce dernier gomme la dimension féerique du conte originel, Massenet la revendique pleinement et laisse libre cours au merveilleux. Marc Minkowski, ardent défenseur de Massenet, voit en Cendrillon un conte de fée, mais aussi « un véritable opéra romantique, un opéra-bouffe d’une verve comparable à celle de Falstaff, un opéra-ballet moderne et un drame cruel de la jeunesse : c’est un festival d’émotions et de sensations renouvelées à chaque scène. Cendrillon est le chef-d’œuvre de l’imagination, de la couleur inédite, du contraste imprévu, du climat sans cesse renouvelé. C’est l’opéra des métamorphoses ». À la tête de ses Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble, le chef s’est entouré d’une distribution intéressante avec, en alternance dans le rôle-titre, Judith Gauthier et Blandine Staskiewicz, et Ewa Podles dans celui de la marâtre. Benjamin Lazar, qui déploie son activité de mise en scène tous azimuts – après la création de Cachafaz d’Oscar Strasnoy dans le même lieu en décembre –, revendique pour cet ouvrage l’esthétique fin-de-siècle de son époque. À noter, parmi les prolongements proposés par l’Opéra Comique, un concert commenté en forme de « florilège Massenet » dirigé par Jean-Luc Tingaud avec l’orchestre OstinatO (8 mars à 14h30) et Cendrillon en vaudevilles, opéra-comique d’Anseaume et Laruette créé en 1759 (14 mars à 20h).
