« En voyant un spectacle comme celui-ci, on parle souvent de minimalisme, regrette Sylvain Bélanger. Je n’aime pas ce terme. Je préfère en parler comme d’un théâtre de l’intérieur, où le voyage est animé par un sens aigu de l’observation de l’humain… » Un théâtre de l’intérieur, en effet, tenu, dense, sans épate, d’une efficacité très cadrée, d’une grande minutie. Un théâtre qui dit ce qu’il a à dire sans chercher pour cela de prétexte alambiqué, qui explore ce qu’il souhaite explorer à travers une construction d’une maîtrise indéniable, à la fois directe et elliptique. S’inspirant d’un fait-divers tragique ayant bouleversé le Canada en 1997 (l’assassinat de Reena Virk, à Victoria, jeune fille de 14 ans battue puis noyée par une bande d’adolescentes de son âge), Joan MacLeod nous place face aux confessions de Braidie, jeune fille de 15 ans qui livre ses rires et ses petites révoltes, ses dilemmes et ses grandes prises de conscience. Un personnage qui trace, au fil de son témoignage, d’incessants parallèles entre le drame de Victoria et la terreur quotidienne qu’un groupe de fille — auquel elle appartient — fait subir à l’une d’entre elles, Sofie, devenue d’année en année leur souffre-douleur.
Un théâtre cherchant à agir sur les consciences
Seule sur scène, Sophie Cadieux incarne la jeune Braidie de façon remarquablement précise. Tout semble aller de soi dans cette performance d’une justesse irréprochable. Echappant aux artifices de la caricature, aux complaisances d’un volontarisme abusif, le naturel, l’acuité, la profondeur de la comédienne québécoise laissent ainsi apparaître la fragilité d’un être cherchant les points d’appui de son existence. Braidie est une adolescente comme une autre. Déchirée entre le sentiment d’appartenance au groupe et le présage d’un malheur à venir, la jeune fille fait le lien entre son propre quotidien et les images télévisuelles la confrontant aux bourreaux de Reena Virk. Finira-t-elle par élever la voix pour défendre Sofie ? L’enjeu de Cette fille-là n’est sans doute pas vraiment dans son issue. Car les hésitations et les interrogations de Braidie suffisent à agir sur les consciences en éclairant le thème de la responsabilité individuelle. Sylvain Bélanger croit « que le théâtre a la force de laisser au citoyen sa liberté de citoyen », qu’il s’agit d’un « lieu de réflexion redonnée ». La réussite de ce spectacle confirme, s’il en était besoin, la pertinence de cette conviction.
