Le silence longtemps a muré la mémoire. « Dans les maisons d’enfants, entre nous, nous ne parlions jamais de ce qui s’était passé avant, ni des parents… Ça n’existait pas. ». Paul Felenbok revient pour la première fois à Varsovie en 1993, avec son frère, de douze ans son aîné. Tous deux sont venus en France en 1946. « Je n’ai rien de mes parents. Je n’ai même pas une photo de ma mère. J’ai écrit sur eux pour qu’il reste quelque chose. ». L’écrivain et metteur en scène David Lescot a recueilli ces paroles et les a croisées avec celles de la cousine de Paul : Wlodka Blit-Robertson, 11 ans en 1943, qui fut cachée à la campagne dans une famille polonaise. « Le récit singulier de deux enfants dans la guerre, puis la construction de leur vie dans l’Europe de l’après-guerre, peut toucher n’importe qui. », dit David Lescot, qui a retranscrit ses entretiens avec Paul et Wlodka pour concevoir Ceux qui restent. Portés en scène sans artifice par Marie Desgranges et Antoine Mathieu, leurs mots disent la vie d’alors vue par des enfants. Sans pathos aucun. Et cette simplicité livre à la fois tout l’effroi de leur parcours et leur extraordinaire puissance de résilience.
