A la différence de la tradition philosophique française, qui, allergique aux dérives psychologisantes qui réduiraient l’œuvre à l’homme, sépare précautionneusement les deux, chaque ouvrage de Michel Onfray s’ouvre par un chapitre autobiographique qui fonde ses analyses. « Nietzsche est le premier à affirmer que toute philosophie est autobiographique, dit Dominique Paquet, et Michel Onfray reprend cette affirmation. J’ai sélectionné les fragments sur l’enfance (à dix ans, Onfray a été placé par sa mère dans un orphelinat), sur le travail en usine, sur son père, cet homme qui a travaillé très dur toute sa vie, sur son vieux maître, Lucien Jerphagnon, sur l’infarctus qu’Onfray a subi à vingt-sept ans, événement fondateur de son écriture. L’idée était de montrer comment un enfant qui vit des expériences douloureuses peut se reconstruire par la philosophie, selon une sorte de résilience. » Construit autour de cette sculpture de soi, « jamais morbide ou larmoyante, mais dressée comme une flamme », ce spectacle se veut « une invitation à la joie, une incitation à se tenir debout, à la verticale, comme un être humain. », selon les mots de Dominique Paquet.
