Avant de monter sur scène dans cet Hamlet pas comme les autres, Jaime Cruz était ouvreur au Teatro la Plaza, à Lima. C’est d’abord pour ce jeune homme porteur du syndrome de Down que Chela de Ferrari a imaginé la version singulière de la tragédie de Shakespeare présentée aux Abbesses. Après un travail de recherche sur les réalités auxquelles sont confrontées les personnes atteintes de trisomie 21, la metteuse en scène a créé un spectacle visant à « récupérer les thèmes principaux [de la pièce] pour réaliser un tissage avec la vie des acteurs ». « Nous nous sommes servis de Hamlet et nous l’avons fait en toute liberté », explique-t-elle. Une liberté qui, sans donner de leçons, passe par l’humour et par le rap pour tenter « d’exercer une influence sur des pensées ou des comportements liés à des préjugés ».
