En 1981, la « jeune danse française » bouillonne. Jean-Claude Gallotta revient d’un voyage initiatique à New-York, où il s’est formé chez Cunningham. Il signe l’une des pièces emblématiques du courant chorégraphique qui se dessine alors : Ulysse se définit comme « une activité continue d’une heure trente », qui rend hommage à l’héritage américain de la post-modern dance – l’absence de narration, le rôle laissé au hasard, le minimalisme – tout en rompant avec ce modèle pour affirmer une voie personnelle, celle que Gallotta et ses confrères vont inventer. La pièce fut remontée en 1993 ; en 2007, elle va réapparaître sous le titre Cher Ulysse. Car Gallotta, conscient du fait qu’un quart de siècle après sa naissance, le spectacle n’aura plus le même sens, a pensé cette re-création comme une missive : « Cher Ulysse, ta Méditerranée a disparu. Ton ciel aujourd’hui est parcouru de nuages noir pétrole, les dieux s’y entretuent. » Une façon d’interroger le monde actuel. Et les raisons qui, malgré tout, nous poussent à danser encore.
