Loin des clichés usés, au plus près de la réalité artistique d’un talent hors du commun, c’est là que se situe le projet du contrebassiste italien, dont le cours de la vie a changé lorsqu’il croisa la route du trompettiste américain en 1979 à Rome. Il l’accompagne, sur scène et sur disque, et lui demeure fidèle jusqu’à sa mort tragique, le 13 mai 1988. Depuis, la vie continue, mais le fantôme de Chet reste malgré tout présent, forcément. Ce soir, il revibre donc, d’autant mieux que c’est le chant sensible de Stéphane Belmondo qui se fait l’écho du maître, épaulé par l’excellent saxophoniste Tony Malaby et le tout aussi recommandé Simon Goubert aux baguettes. Avec en prime, le sublime “Chet’s Romance”, César du meilleur court-métrage documentaire en 1989.
