Il a beau n’avoir plus rien à prouver, Chick Corea aime se lancer de nouveaux défis. Celui qui fut l’un des piliers des embardées électriques de Miles Davis à la fin des années 60 avant de fonder le très populaire combo fusion Return To Forever la décennie suivante n’a pas envie de se reposer sur ses lauriers. Avec son tout nouveau quintette, baptisé « The Vigil », il affirme vouloir « défier la norme, en tentant de ne jamais rester dans un même style. » Au menu, des alliés substantiels : de l’inévitable contrebassiste Christian McBride au multi-souffleur britannique Tim Garland en passant par le prometteur guitariste Charles Altura. Mais l’élément le plus diablement perturbateur de cette nouvelle formation se trouve derrière les fûts : complice tentaculaire de Steve Coleman et Vijay Iyer, Marcus Gilmore n’est autre que le petit-fils de Roy Haynes, le manitou des baguettes avec lequel Chick Corea concocta son premier chef-d’œuvre en 1968, « Now He Sings, Now He Sobs ». La boucle est bouclée.
