Le Cid fut à trois reprises une source d’inspiration pour le compositeur Antonio Sacchini (1730-1786), arrivé d’Angleterre à Paris en 1781. Là où il ne tardera pas à devenir le protégé de Marie-Antoinette (qui en fait son professeur de chant) et un rival de Gluck alors tout puissant, contribuant à l’évolution de l’opéra français dans ces années prérévolutionnaires. Sacchini excellera dans le registre de la tragédie lyrique à la française comme dans cet ouvrage, composé en 1783 et revisité aujourd’hui par la metteure en scène Sandrine Anglade et le directeur musical Julien Chauvin. « L’opéra, qui fut un des opéras favoris de Marie-Antoinette, sera joué 57 fois à l’Académie Royale de Musique et attestera du goût des parisiens pour ce type de récits héroïques et historiques », précise le jeune directeur musical du Concert de la Loge. Le compositeur semble s’aventurer ici jusqu’aux portes du Romantisme. « L’œuvre apparaît comme un objet singulier, « transhistorique », faisant basculer ce qui fut une tragédie épique (puisant dans les valeurs de l’Ancien Régime) vers un drame pré-romantique. Ici comptent les sentiments, les tourments intérieurs, se détachant sur fond de monde en guerre (la Castille attaquée par les Maures) pour finir dans un ballet digne d’un grand final romantique » explique Sandrine Anglade.
