Le traitement du piano par Chopin vous influence-t-il dans votre écriture pour cet instrument ?
Karol Beffa : Il y a quelque chose d’intimidant, chez Chopin, modèle inaccessible qui a su trouver un style personnel dès ses premiers opus, et qui, comme Brahms ou Ravel, n’a écrit que des chefs-d’œuvre. Etant donné son éloignement dans le temps, l’influence qu’il peut exercer sur un compositeur d’aujourd’hui n’est pas du même ordre que celle qu’exercerait par exemple Bartok et Stravinsky ou, plus près de nous, Ligeti et Dutilleux. Par mes origines polonaises, notamment, je me sens très proche de ce compositeur : toutes proportions gardées, j’essaie de m’inspirer de son sens harmonique, de sa prédilection pour l’ombre plutôt que pour la clarté sans mystère, de la générosité de ses courbes mélodiques à une époque où la notion de thème reste encore taboue chez certains, enfin de la façon qu’il a de faire naître ses idées musicales de la position de la main sur le clavier, via le phénomène des « empreintes ». De ce point de vue, je ne partage absolument pas l’idée reçue selon laquelle le fait d’être pianiste serait un handicap pour un compositeur qui écrit pour le piano…
Quel regard portez-vous sur la dimension d’improvisation propre à de nombreuses oeuvres de Chopin ?
K.B. : Chopin n’a pas besoin, pour canaliser son discours, d’avoir recours à des structures préétablies comme la sonate, la fugue, la passacaille : chez lui, la forme est portée par le discours musical lui-même. Ce qui est fascinant, c’est l’équilibre toujours maintenu entre intuitions premières d’improvisateur et pensées compositionnelles abstraites, entre fulgurance de l’inspiration et déploiement du flux musical, entre liberté et fantaisie propres à l’oral, contrôle et minutie propres à l’écrit. Au XIXe siècle, tous les compositeurs étaient interprètes, la plupart des virtuoses s’étaient au moins essayés à la composition. Aujourd’hui, c’est seulement à l’orgue que la tradition du compositeur-interprète-improvisateur a perduré, et encore… Que cela soit tombé dans l’oubli est très dommageable parce que cela a conduit certains compositeurs à écrire contre au lieu d’écrire pour l’instrument.
L’emploi des musiques populaires par Chopin peut-il se retrouver dans un langage contemporain ?
K.B. : Je crois que souvent, les compositeurs contemporains se méfient des musiques populaires d’aujourd’hui – ressenties comme primitives, voire primaires -, comme ils se méfient de tout rythme pulsé, marqué, incisif. Est-ce la conséquence d’un choix qui les ferait se méfier d’une approche des sons trop immédiate, corporelle pourrait-on dire, et qui les conduirait pour s’en distancier à verser dans une intellectualité supposée plus « pure » ? Trop souvent, cette revendication d’une primauté de l’intellect n’est qu’une élaboration factice masquant un manque d’artisanat véritable.
