Le traitement du piano par Chopin vous influence-t-il dans votre écriture pour cet instrument ?
Thierry Escaich : Je ne sépare jamais l’écriture instrumentale d’un auteur et les idées musicales qui en sont à la source. Chez Chopin, on voit bien comment le bouillonnement interne et le lyrisme mélodique amènent cette exubérance pianistique. Chez moi, l’écriture pianistique vient plus directement de l’orchestre, mais c’est plutôt l’écriture pour orgue qui résulte du même processus.
Quel regard portez-vous sur la dimension d’improvisation propre à de nombreuses œuvres de Chopin ?
T. C. : Chopin était un remarquable improvisateur. Sa liberté et sa souplesse mélodique en témoignent tout autant que le foisonnement de son écriture. Mais avant tout, c’est l’inventivité formelle qui m’a le plus marqué, ne serait-ce que dans les quatre Ballades : une forme toujours réinventée, un poème symphonique implacable dans son déroulement émotionnel.
L’emploi des musiques populaires par Chopin peut-il se retrouver dans un langage contemporain ?
T.C. : Oui. Et d’autant plus que, à l’instar de Chopin, on le fait naturellement et sans le théoriser. Si la musique s’échappe de ses racines populaires, elle s’assèche.
