Le plus ancien festival lyrique de France (la première représentation lyrique dans le théâtre antique fut le Joseph de Méhul en… 1869) fête cette année sa quarantième édition depuis son renouveau en 1971. On le sait, le lieu se prête particulièrement aux œuvres de grande envergure et les opéras de Verdi notamment y sont souvent présentés. Cette édition 2011 déroge moins que jamais à la règle, avec la reprise de deux ouvrages du compositeur italien. Charles Roubaud a déjà mis en scène Aïda par deux fois devant le « mur » d’Orange, en 1995 puis en 2006, pour des résultats très différents – plus épuré et s’appuyant avec goût sur des projections vidéo pour la production la plus récente. Le metteur en scène cherchera donc à donner de l’œuvre une lecture une fois encore renouvelée, avec l’ambition d’en donner une vision plus intime, avec Indra Thomas dans le rôle-titre. Pour Rigoletto, Paul-Émile Fourny signera de nouveau la mise en scène, dix ans après sa première production. Sans modifier radicalement sa lecture de l’œuvre, il s’est entouré d’une nouvelle équipe artistique, avec une scénographie confiée à Louis Désiré, un habitué des lieux (il a travaillé avec Nicolas Joel sur Aïda – encore ! – et Nabucco et avec Jean-Claude Auvray sur Don Carlos et Elektra).
Une quarantième édition placée sous le signe de Verdi
Dans la fosse, l’Orchestre national de France assurera les représentations de Rigoletto sous la direction de Roberto Rizzi-Brignoli (et avec Patrizia Ciofi dans le rôle de Gilda). Celles d’Aïda sont confiées au flamboyant Tugan Sokhiev à la tête de son Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse. Le chef ossète devient ainsi en quelque sorte un directeur musical officieux de la manifestation, puisqu’il dirigera également deux concerts symphoniques (un programme Rachmaninov et Tchaïkovski avec le pianiste Denis Matsuev le 11 juillet et les Huitième et Neuvième Symphonies de Beethoven le 16 juillet). À noter enfin, le retour du théâtre à Orange avec Andromaque de Racine le 17 juin, dans la mise en scène de Muriel Mayette.
