On peut compter sur la fougue du patriarche Neeme Järvi, père des chefs Paavo et Kristjan, pour, à 80 ans, faire sonner comme pas un les œuvres de Chostakovitch (1906-1975). Ce dernier fut, toute sa vie, contraint de « composer » avec le régime soviétique et sommé de produire des œuvres de circonstance glorifiant la doctrine communiste alors qu’il était attiré par des recherches plus formelles et apolitiques. Le programme donné par l’Orchestre National de France montre l’inventivité et l’ironie de sa musique pour tenter de déjouer les contraintes idéologiques. Le Concerto pour piano, trompette et orchestre à cordes, brillant patchwork citationnel composé en 1933, fut interprété par Chostakovitch lui-même à de nombreuses reprises. La Symphonie n°9, composée en 1945, faillit lui coûter la vie car Staline ne supporta pas son caractère enjoué, contraire à ce qu’il attendait. Enfin, la Symphonie n°12 « Année 1917 » est une commande du parti pour célébrer la Révolution d’octobre 1917 et le 90e anniversaire de Lénine.
