On sait Akram Khan dans un cycle où le récit et les souvenirs d’enfance deviennent une matière première dans le processus de création. En décembre, Until the lions montrait à La Villette une réminiscence des contes qui ont baigné sa jeunesse à travers une adaptation de l’épopée indienne du Mahabharata. Avec Chotto Desh, qui fait suite à Desh dans une version plus tournée vers le jeune public, le chorégraphe montre à quel point sa danse peut révéler une foule d’images et de sensations : un appel à une plateforme téléphonique située au Bengladesh, et nous voilà plongés dans le bouillonnement et l’effervescence d’une ville comme Dacca. C’est ainsi qu’il se met lui-même en scène, dans son rapport au père, qui peste contre cet enfant « qui ne tient pas en place », et dans son lien avec sa mère, qui lui racontait des histoires fantastiques. C’est l’occasion d’un voyage porté par un dispositif de projections numériques, au cœur de la jungle. Le spectacle évite les écueils et place la danse au centre : ainsi, c’est l’histoire d’une identité en mouvement qui nous est contée, d’un jeune homme devenu danseur dans la richesse de son héritage familial et culturel.
