Depuis déjà pas mal d’années, celui qui s’est fait connaître comme un des artistes de l’art du classique trio jazz trace d’autres voies. On se souvient de son duo avec Joshua Redman Salle Pleyel, ou bien de son « Modern Music » avec le pianiste Kevin Hayes, autour de pièces plus contemporaines. Amateur de musique folk et rock, le natif de Jacksonville est cette fois associé au compositeur Chris Thile, virtuose de la mandoline et « voix » des Punch Brothers, qui lui aussi a toujours tissé des ponts entre des genres a priori éloignés. Autant dire que ces deux-là ont de quoi s’entendre : du bluegrass au postbop, de la mélodie finement ciselée aux harmonies légèrement fragmentées, cette paire d’as devrait combler les esthètes qui ont fui les chapelles musicales.
