La Céciliade, qui sera représentée pour la première fois depuis 1606, est-elle un cas isolé ou un exemple parmi d’autres de ce « théâtre des martyrs » ?
Christian Biet : C’est la seule partition complète que l’on ait retrouvée, mais il n’est pas improbable qu’il y ait eu d’autres exemples d’un maître de grammaire et d’un maître de musique travaillant de concert. Cependant, la Céciliade, avec son extraordinaire violence, s’inscrit dans un mouvement alors très répandu en Europe, qu’il s’agisse des « tragédies des saints » en Espagne ou des tragédies religieuses, souvent dansées, alors en vogue à Florence, Venise ou à la curie romaine. En Angleterre, c’est plus compliqué : sous Élisabeth, ce sont des œuvres beaucoup plus politiques et laïques – ce que l’on appellera le théâtre élisabéthain.
La violence est donc le trait commun à ces œuvres littéraires et musicales ?
C. B. : Les tragédies religieuses sont représentées avec une violence extrême. Dans le cas de Sainte Cécile, le martyre est représenté derrière un rideau… mais le rideau est soulevé pour le laisser voir. Au contraire des mystères médiévaux, interdits en raison de leurs fréquents débordements, ces représentations de la violence étaient tout à fait acceptées, dans la mesure où ces effets frappants sont susceptibles de conduire à la religion.
Quelles sont les principales difficultés rencontrées pour la recréation de la musique ?
Jean-Charles Léon : Cela tient d’abord à la partition, destinée à la diffusion de la musique et non à donner une trace fidèle de son exécution en 1606. L’œuvre n’a jamais été jouée telle quelle ; c’était à l’interprète de l’adapter, en fonction des effectifs dont il disposait. Du reste, il n’y a aucune adéquation sur la partition entre les quatre voix (en parties séparées) et les personnages : le choeur correspond tout autant au rôle de Cécile qu’à celui de Valérian.
Philippe Foulon : Il n’y a pas non plus d’indication d’instruments et notre travail consiste à s’insérer dans l’écriture vocale, à choisir des instruments qui correspondent à chaque tessiture. Souvent, sous une partie vocale se cache une partie instrumentale. Les « instruments d’amour » que nous utilisons – une famille d’instruments qui avaient pratiquement disparu et que nous recréons – permettent de construire des lignes de polyphonies ultra-claires, de révéler l’harmonie intérieure de la note.
J-C. L. : Cette clarté qu’apportent les « instruments d’amour » est essentielle. C’est un choix esthétique et artistique qui s’inscrit pleinement dans la symbolique de la Céciliade : la révélation d’un martyre.
