On ne présente plus Christian Escoudé, première et grande figure moderne de la guitare de l’après-Django. Né en 1947 d’un père et d’une mère charentaise, il a depuis toujours construit sa trajectoire en ancrant son projet musical dans le jazz et la tradition gitane. Fou de Django oui, et plus que jamais, mais avec le « souci permanent de ne pas tomber dans la caricature, précise Escoudé. Je ne suis pas uniquement inspiré par Django, mais aussi par Pat Metheny, Wes Montgomery… Mon but est de trouver mon propre style tout en connaissant la tradition ». Son carnet de bal parle pour lui : le géant Escoudé a joué avec les plus grands, d’Eddy Louiss à Stan Getz, de Bill Evans à John McLaughlin… En 1985, il forme le premier "Trio Gitan" avec Boulou Ferré et Babik Reinhardt, et presque vingt ans plus tard le « Nouveau Trio Gitan » que l’on retrouve (en partie) lors de ces quelques dates « rue des Lombards ». « J’ai voulu imaginer une "Gypsy Planete". J’ai eu envie d’orchestrer plus, de donner à entendre une musique plus riche, plus élaborée. Il n’y aura pas que trois guitares comme dans le Nouveau Trio Gitan. J’ai tenu à lancer des invitations différentes chaque soir » précise-t-il. Entouré de Daryl Hall à la contrebasse et Jean-Baptiste Laya à la guitare, le guitariste propose une relecture de différentes formules chères à Django, entouré de Marcel Azzola le 22, du violoniste Florin Niculescu le 23 ou du clarinettiste Gabriele Mirabassi le 24. « J’aime ces musiciens : leur expérience, leur virtuosité, leur métier. Ils comptent parmi les meilleurs musiciens internationaux. Leurs noms me sont tout de suite venus à l’esprit, ajoute Escoudé. L’accordéon illustre la première période de Django, le violon celle où il jouait avec Stéphane Grappelli au sein du Quintette du Hot Club de France et enfin la clarinette renvoie aux années 50, période où il a notamment enregistré à Rome ».
