Pourquoi monter Coriolan ?
Christian Schiaretti : L’idée n’en revient pas à moi seul : c’est une demande de Wladimir Yordanoff qui a fait naître mon envie de monter cette pièce, renforcée par la conjoncture politique du moment, lors de la campagne électorale des dernières élections présidentielles. Coriolan est une œuvre majeure, peu montée, difficile à comprendre et difficile à présenter car il faut être le nombre suffisant pour la jouer !
Quels sont les thèmes abordés dans cette pièce ?
C. S. : Shakespeare y aborde le double problème du pouvoir : comment y accéder et comment le conserver ? Apparaît aussi dans cette pièce la question de la représentation et du traitement à réserver au corps dans l’exercice et la démonstration du pouvoir. L’homme de pouvoir est doté de deux corps, l’un humain et l’autre surhumain qui doit être montré avec tous les artifices de la représentation. Quand Coriolan doit montrer ses blessures au peuple pour le convaincre, le corps qu’il doit exhiber est celui de la représentation supérieure. Or Coriolan est rétif à la représentation et à la dissimulation et manque de souplesse dans le rapport au politique : c’est un adepte du franc-parler. Shakespeare fait l’hypothèse que le franc-parler absolu est incapable d’accéder et de se maintenir au pouvoir.

Est-ce à dire que Coriolan est l’image de la vertu ?
C. S. : La vertu est pour lui affaire de caste et repose sur la franchise et la vérité. Il refuse les aléas des compromissions politiques au nom de la franchise. Mais Coriolan est avant tout un aristocrate. Ce pourquoi cette œuvre est aussi une réflexion sur le principe de l’élection : est-ce qu’un homme vaut une voix ? L’exercice du pouvoir, surtout à la Renaissance, se nourrit de Hobbes et Machiavel. Or Coriolan traite le Léviathan par le mépris. La versatilité potentielle du peuple fait qu’il est le lieu de toutes les manipulations. Le bon peuple en est conscient et n’en porte pas pour autant la critique : c’est inclus dans le contrat, en quelque sorte. Coriolan ne peut pas l’admettre.
Pourquoi faire le choix d’une distribution aussi nombreuse ?
C. S. : Parce que c’est une erreur de penser le peuple dans une unité et de croire que le patricien Coriolan doit faire face à une masse impulsive et non contradictoire. J’ai choisi que le peuple soit en masse sur scène car il le faut contradictoire pour que le champ de la manipulation soit possible. Pour faire vivre la contradiction, il est nécessaire de faire jouer une troupe nombreuse. Voilà justement une question qu’on pourrait soumettre à un Président de la République qui pose le problème de la rentabilité à la création. Si les conditions économiques empêchent de monter une œuvre dans la nécessité de sa représentation, on perd alors la plénitude de nombreuses œuvres et on perd par conséquent les fondements réflexifs dont on a besoin pour vivre en commun. Ainsi, monter Coriolan, oui, l’acte est citoyen, c’est le moins qu’on puisse dire !
