Il est aujourd’hui considéré comme l’un des meilleurs interprètes du répertoire romantique germanique. Patron de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Munich, Christian Thielemann livre des versions d’une rare intensité, où rubato et legato se mêlent de manière hautement expressive. Au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, ce chef de tradition, au meilleur sens du terme, s’attaque, avec l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Vienne, aux Symphonies n°7 et n°8 de Beethoven. Son enregistrement de la Symphonie n°7 (avec le Philharmonia Orchestra, DG) nous avait laissé un sentiment mitigé : fasciné d’un côté par un engagement presque lyrique et agacé de l’autre par une trop grande propension à l’emphase. La meilleure chose est de se faire une idée en « live », d’autant que le concert comprend également une création de Jörg Widmann, un clarinettiste et compositeur allemand au langage aussi efficace que personnel.
