Après la mort de Charles Munch, premier « patron » de la phalange parisienne, Karajan occupa de 1969 à 1971 le poste de conseiller musical et dirigea plusieurs programmes à la tête de l’OP, à Paris et aux Festivals de Salzbourg et Aix-en-Provence. La Symphonie fantastique de Berlioz reste la partition emblématique de cette trop courte collaboration un peu oubliée. Christoph Eschenbach choisit de son côté Beethoven et la Missa Solemnis pour rendre hommage à Karajan. Le Chœur de l’orchestre, dirigé comme à l’accoutumée par Didier Bouture et Geoffroy Jourdain, s’est préparé de manière spécifique et approfondie à ces deux concerts exceptionnels lors d’une académie d’été ouverte aussi à de jeunes chanteurs en voie de professionnalisation. Avec en solistes, les voix de Christine Schafer (soprano), Annette Jahns (mezzo), Paul Groves (ténor), Robert Holl (basse).
