Pour cette circonstance festive, Christoph Eschenbach s’entoure de fidèles et prestigieux amis musiciens comme Gidon Kremer, Yo-Yo Ma et Tzimon Barto mais aussi choisit de jouer Mozart dans les Concertos n°12 et 23 qu’il dirigera du piano. Pour la petite histoire, alors qu’approche l’heure de quitter son orchestre parisien, il faut se souvenir que c’est comme pianiste que Christoph Eschenbach fut pour la première fois l’hôte de l’Orchestre de Paris, en 1969, à l’invitation d’Herbert von Karajan, et déjà dans Mozart… Avant ce concert à haut pouvoir émotionnel, Eschenbach dirigera en ouverture de cette semaine anniversaire un programme Berlioz construit autour de la cantate La Mort de Cléopâtre (avec en soliste la soprano Waltraud Meier) et de la Symphonie fantastique, œuvre emblématique de la phalange parisienne. Après dix ans à la tête de l’Orchestre de Paris, Eschenbach cèdera sa place en début de saison prochaine à Paavo Järvi et s’envolera alors pour Washington afin de prendre la direction musicale de l’Orchestre Symphonique National et du John F. Kennedy Center of the Performing Arts.
