Quel le chemin vous a mené à Nougaro ?
Etrangement, ce chanteur a toujours été à mes côtés. Je ne l’ai jamais vu en scène, mais je me souviens de sensations fortes, lorsque, enfant, j’ai entendu pour la première fois Toulouse. J’aime sa manière, si singulière, de frotter le jazz, le swing et le rock, de pousser sans cesse la recherche musicale. Et puis sa poésie, puissante, insolente, sombre aussi. Nougaro est un sculpteur de mots. Il met en scène la langue pour créer des images. La forme de son écriture tient sa révolte. Ses chansons déroulent des scénarios où la musique conduit la dramaturgie. Quand on écoute Il y avait une ville, on sent le balancement des hanches de la femme qu’il regarde, on devine ses yeux, sa gourmandise, le frisson de l’air. Un spectacle est aussi un prétexte pour voyager dans une œuvre, pour rencontrer un poète, découvrir l’être et le fréquenter, comme un ami.

Nougaro sait comme peu de chanteurs faire swinguer la langue française, à la manière des anglo-saxons. Son amour pour les grands poètes épiques, notamment Hugo, se décèle dans ses textes, dans la voracité de la langue.
Comment faire entendre la poésie de Nougaro si intimement associée dans nos esprits aux airs de ses chansons ?
Je ne voulais pas fabriquer un reportage mais esquisser un portrait subjectif, évidement partiel. J’ai fouillé dans sa vie et son œuvre à travers des interviews radiophoniques, des documents télévisés, des témoignages, des livres, les disques, les textes des chansons… A partir de tous ces matériaux, j’ai voulu bâtir non une narration, mais une fiction. Ce montage, qui s’affranchit de la chronologie comme de l’exhaustivité biographique, dévoile la tonalité sombre qui se cache derrière sa musique, brillante, colorée, servie par d’excellentes formations. Je voulais juste une guitare, avec six cordes comme une portée sur laquelle se dessine cette mélancolie.
Comment avez-vous mis en scène ce portrait ?
Nous avons cherché avec Cécile Garcia-Fogel et Dominique Bérodot ce qui nous rassemblait et ce qui nous ressemblait. Peu à peu, à force de tailler dans la matière, a émergé une silhouette, épurée comme un trait. J’avais en tête une image prise dans l’atelier de Giacometti. On y voit Le Chien, une sculpture d’une finesse magnifique, et, par terre, les débris de plâtre dont elle a surgi… Accompagnés à la guitare par Anthony Winzenrieth, les comédiens chantent, parlent, monologuent, se glissent de temps à autre dans le personnage. Ils sont deux, comme deux paroles, le féminin et le masculin, deux figures possibles de Nougaro.
Vous avez pris en janvier dernier la direction du Théâtre Gérard Philipe à Saint-Denis. Quelles sont les lignes de la programmation pour la prochaine saison ?
Elles s’appuient sur la singularité et la force du territoire, aussi passionnant et vif que complexe et contrasté. La Seine-Saint-Denis offre l’image de ce que la France sera demain ou ne sera pas. Tous les enjeux y sont exacerbés. Le théâtre devient une lumière. Jouer Don Juan de Molière, monté par Yan-Joël Colin, Electronic City de Falk Richter, par Cyril Teste et le collectif MxM, la Trilogie de l’Omme de Jacques Rebotier, Scanner, un spectacle sur Guy Debord imaginé par David Ayala, Dehors au-dedans, une création musicale de Nicolas Frize ou encore Cœur ardent, magnifique conte d’Alexandre Ostrovski que je mettrai en scène… Tout donne du sens. Nous proposerons également quatre pièces en alternance sur le thème des « Vi(ll)es ». Nous devons aussi nous montrer attentifs aux talents qui émergent sur ce territoire et apportent une autre parole, une autre vision. Nous organiserons par exemple des soirées Slam. Ce théâtre a besoin d’artistes qui viennent enrichir son aventure.
