La Cité de la musique a déjà par le passé tenté de vertigineux et suggestifs sauts dans le temps (Bach/Berio, Mozart/Lachenmann). Le rapprochement de Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) et Gérard Grisey (1946-1998) s’impose avec plus d’évidence encore. En donnant une importance sensiblement équivalente aux différents instruments dans ses Pièces de clavecin en concert (publiées en 1741), le compositeur d’Hippolyte et Aricie envisageait d’une façon nouvelle la quête du son. « Il faut non seulement que les instruments se confondent entre eux mais encore que les concertants s’entendent les uns les autres » précisait Rameau dans sa préface à la partition. Gérard Grisey n’aurait pas renié un tel propos pour illustrer le sextuor Vortex Temporum. Le lendemain, Christophe Rousset joue les suites en mi et sol de Rameau, toujours sur un clavecin Jean Henry Hemsch de 1761 du Musée de la musique.
