S’il a d’abord construit sa réputation dans le Baroque, Christophe Rousset est désormais également, avec son ensemble Les Talens Lyriques, un défenseur de choix du répertoire romantique, en particulier de raretés lyriques françaises. Il propose au Théâtre du Châtelet une intégrale des Symphonies de Schubert qui privilégie l’association des opus par affinités plutôt qu’un ordre chronologique, sans ajouter les reconstructions, à partir des esquisses, de la Septième ou des deux derniers mouvements de l’Inachevée, voire même d’une Dixième Symphonie, que certains musicologues n’ont pas manqué d’essayer, avec des succès divers. Mettre en regard la Première, la Troisième et la Huitième permet de mesurer le développement de la singularité expressive du langage schubertien, tandis que juxtaposer la Cinquième et la Neuvième fait entendre l’assimilation originale par le compositeur viennois des grands modèles, mozartien pour la première, et, pour la seconde, beethovénien, avec des idées musicales que l’on retrouvera jusque chez Bruckner.
