Temps fort et point d’orgue des Journées Dauvergne à Versailles, vaste cycle qui célèbre l’un des compositeurs les plus influents, respectés et talentueux des dernières années du règne de Louis XIV, la tragédie lyrique Hercule mourant est interprétée par Rousset enpremière mondialedepuis sa création en 1761.Une œuvre logiquement inconnue ou presque des mélomanes, que ses nouveaux interprètes décrivent comme porteuse d’une grande intensité dramatique, au style sévère et noble, et reçue par ses contemporains comme une musique « mâle et vigoureuse », au ton « véritablement pathétique ». L’œuvre promet en tout cas d’apporter un témoignage captivant du grand style français alors en son plein accomplissement, sous la plume d’un compositeur considéré comme le fils spirituel de Rameau.Avec Les Chantres du Centre de musique baroque de Versailles d’Olivier Schneebeli, le basse-baryton Andrew Foster-Williams dans le rôle d’Hercule et la soprano Véronique Gens dans celui de Déjanire.
