Celui qu’on a souvent surnommé le « Mozart cubain » fait son grand retour dans la lumière avec la musique de son dernier album en date Jazz Batá 2, sorti à l’automne dernier, qui est en quelque sorte la suite d’un précédent opus sorti… il y a 46 ans, en 1972 ! Dans cet opus enregistré dans l’urgence et l’euphorie créative de la confrontation avec un grand maître des tambours batá (l’instrument sacré de la religion Yoruba), Dreiser Durruthy Bombalé, en complicité aussi avec son percussionniste de toujours Yaroldy Abreu Robles, Chucho Valdès remonte une fois de plus, mais par un chemin de traverse, aux sources africaines de la musique cubaine. « J’ai appliqué à mes solos les différents rythmes du batá. Le piano est bien sûr un instrument harmonique mais il est aussi percussif, et l’on peut jouer des percussions dessus. » explique la légende vivante qui, à 77 ans, et après avoir écrit quelques-unes des plus belles pages du jazz afro-cubain, d’abord dans le sillage de son père père Bebo Valdés, puis surtout à la tête du groupe Irakere, ou plus récemment avec ses Afro-Cuban Messengers, reste un artiste en questionnement et en évolution.
