Les premières comédies de Molière parmi lesquelles a puisé Christian Schiaretti pour composer son spectacle sont celles avec lesquelles l’Illustre Théâtre a sillonné la France avant le retour Paris où seront composées et jouées les pièces de son répertoire considérées comme les plus abouties. A cette époque, remarque Schiaretti, Molière est « auteur au sens où l’on pouvait l’être à l’époque, c’est-à-dire plagiaire », s’inspirant du canevas et des personnages habituels de la farce. Mais cette première partie de son œuvre est la matrice de la suite et on y trouve déjà « les définitions de son théâtre futur ». Monter ce premier Molière, c’est donc le « voir naître » selon les mots du directeur du TNP et s’apercevoir « qu’il n’est pas aussi moral et moraliste que ce que l’on pense ». Les valets, les exploités et les pauvres y roulent les bourgeois et les puissants et un rire salvateur aux accents anarchistes y cascade avec entrain. Retrouvant les conditions minimalistes du jeu des tournées de la bande à Poquelin (pas de décor, quelques accessoires, du fard et des costumes), la troupe du TNP exploite avec bonheur tout le registre de la farce en cinq pièces à réentendre et redécouvrir en triptyques ou en intégrale.
