« Ryoan-ji » est un temple bouddhiste de Kyoto, célèbre pour son jardin de pierres. John Cage s’est inspiré de l’architecture de ce jardin pour composer cinq pièces intitulées Ryoanji : il avait disposé sur le papier, à partir de tirages au sort, des pierres qu’il avait ensuite reliées d’un trait de crayon. Les lignes mélodiques ainsi formées s’inscrivent ensuite dans des tessitures dont certaines sont extrêmement réduites : elles obligent alors les musiciens à maîtriser des variations de hauteur infimes, à la limite du perceptible. C’est précisément ce qui intéresse le percussionniste Lê Quan Ninh : « Comment pourrait-on décrire les changements qui s’opèrent en nous quand nous jouons Ryoanji? Et peut-on user du mot jouer pour décrire le fait de partager ce moment d’écoute si singulier où ce qui s’offre à entendre se trouve dans les interstices du son, comme entre les pierres de la partition ? »
Une pièce chorégraphique et musicale
Lê Quan Ninh et Olivia Grandville ont tous deux, à plusieurs reprises, interrogé Ryoanji. Aujourd’hui, ils créent ensemble Cinq Ryoanji, pour six musiciens et cinq danseurs. Leur collaboration apparaît comme un écho à la relation danse-musique qui fut fondamentale pour Cage, grand partenaire de Cunningham. Comme le souligne Olivia Grandville : « Les deux partitions, chorégraphique et musicale, doivent pouvoir jouer ensemble, glisser l’une sur l’autre, à l’image de ces feuilles de papier transparent que Cage utilise et superpose parfois comme processus de composition »…
