Carlo Brandt, massif, voix rauque et posée, est Kevin, l’anti-héros de la pièce Ciseaux, papier, caillou de l’Australien Daniel Keene. Tel un atlante, un homme soutenant un entablement à la manière d’Atlas qui porte le ciel sur ses épaules, le tailleur de pierre a tout perdu le jour où la fabrique de la carrière qui l’employait l’a licencié. Le sentiment de vivre s’est effondré en son intime. À la maison, la présence affectueuse de sa femme (Marie-Paule Laval) et de sa fille (Camille Pélicier-Brouet) le trouble ; le chef de famille craint l’incompréhension. Un chômeur et collègue moins touché (Philippe Smith), accompagne Kevin dans ses virées alcoolisées : « On est des légendes toi et moi … » Le plus souvent, Kevin monologue en revenant sur les vestiges de son passé. La vieille fabrique fantomatique est à présent désertée par les hommes et leurs outils : « … on prenait ce qu’il nous fallait directement dans la paroi de la carrière une stèle un socle une figure une colonne… » L’homme se souvient de la beauté des bruits des coups assénés sur la paroi, de la foule ouvrière en activité ; il médite sur le travail et les raisons d’une vie intérieure digne. L’acte de tailler est une métaphore de la création.
Paradis perdu
Le geste puissant du tailleur hiératique dégage plénitude et sérénité. Le dresseur de stèle est un dresseur d’existence : il inscrit patiemment l’homme dans le monde. Sensible à la foi, il ressent comme vaine sa Madone sculptée. La pierre taillée pouvait donner accès à l’éternité dans un défi au temps. Or « tout change c’est notre destinée ». L’époque de la fabrique est révolue comme la révolution qui décrit un cercle. Et la fille apprend la Révolution française à l’école : « … un poids est tombé des épaules des gens ordinaires par la suite il y a eu des complications politiques… » L’ancienne carrière est un paradis perdu, un reflet épuré de la terre où le travail manuel accomplissait l’homme. Le poème dramatique de Keene est mis en lumière par la vision plastique et aérienne de Daniel Jeanneteau et Marie-Christine Soma, dans le respect du silence et de la pensée de celui qui souffre et doute. Un rideau de plastique laisse transparaître les ombres vivantes et la stèle religieuse. La scénographie dégage la clarté lumineuse d’un quotidien économe et sacré, la cuisine en formica pour les repas familiaux et les spots de bar de nuit. L’ouvrier, fossoyeur de sa propre tombe shakespearienne, gît et rayonne à la fois de sa gloire évanouie.
