Créé à Londres en 1997 et adapté au cinéma en 2004, Closer a eu autant de succès sur les planches que sur le grand écran, dans le film de Mike Nichols. Comédie cinglante mêlant émotion et humour, la pièce dessine une carte du Tendre un peu amère, qu’orientent le sexe, la séduction, la jalousie et le mensonge. Quatre explorateurs pour ce pays du Tendre qu’ils voudraient terre de sincérité : une photographe reconnue, un écrivain incompris, une jeune fille borderline et un docteur en dermatologie. « Quatre personnages dont l’enjeu principal de chacun serait peut-être, finalement, une quête d’amour, d’amour absolu, dont la transparence serait la preuve, comme un antidote à un surcroît permanent de faux-semblants. Hélas pour les couples, tout au moins dans Closer, cette franchise conduit fatalement à la séparation. », dit la metteur en scène Françoise Courvoisier, qui orchestre avec énergie cette valse des attachements « entre rires et pincements de cœur ».
