Écouter Jacques Sereys dire Cocteau sous l’œil céleste de Jean Marais, disciple et amant du poète disparu, relève pour le spectateur d’un cours vivant d’Histoire du vingtième siècle autant que d’Histoire de l’art. Le pari est audacieux en forme de monologue biographique, un collage construit à partir de textes et d’aphorismes issus des correspondances et des romans, pièces, ballets, films et poèmes du génie éclectique Cocteau. On n’oublie pas non plus l’œuvre graphique représentée sur le plateau, un jeté de masques et de miroirs entre le mensonge et la vérité dans la vie comme sur la page blanche traversée de traits efficaces. En échange, les frontières entre le réel et le surréel s’estompent et l’image mythique de la pénétration de la silhouette humaine à travers la glace lumineuse est emblématique. Cocteau fait retour sur le siècle dernier au ralenti et à l’envers, à la façon d’un film personnel qu’il voudrait révéler. L’artiste a l’âge de la Tour Eiffel ; il contracte très jeune le mal du « rouge et or », la passion du théâtre, surtout quand il regarde sa mère se préparer le soir pour sa sortie au spectacle, une femme à « la noblesse de vierge espagnole » avec fourrures, dentelles, plumes et perles.
Les morts voisinent avec les vivants qui les portent en eux.
Défilent les rencontres sentimentales, platoniques ou pas, comme ce collégien inaugural, « une figure de bandit en herbe, une beauté de chevreuil d’automne dure et impudique.» Plus tard, Raymond Radiguet trop tôt emporté symbolise la passion amoureuse de l’artiste, « un beau visage d’albâtre éclairé de l’intérieur » : il savait, il devinait, il comprenait. La mort de l’amant provoque chez l’esseulé l’usage et l’abus d’opium qui insensibilise la douleur et ramène l’être à l’état végétal. Déterminantes auparavant auront été la rencontre avec les ballets russes de Diaghilev et la création du Sacre du Printemps (1913) de Stravinski. Le danseur Nijinski, le musicien Satie, le peintre Picasso, le poète Max Jacob, les créateurs impressionnèrent durablement Cocteau. Ce furent des combattants de la Difficulté d’être (1947),sensibles aux battements de cœur universels, enregistrés dans le Sang d’un Poète (1930). Les morts voisinent avec les vivants qui les portent en eux. Marais est le lumineux Tristan qu’aimait le Roi Marc dans Tristan et Yseut, la légende éternelle. Cocteau ne s’est pas départi de l’enfance qui cherche à s’échapper vers la beauté. Il a milité pour la véracité de ce mystère à travers l’écriture poétique et en accord secret avec la vie intérieure. Un tour de force que ne renie pas Jacques Sereys qui joue Marais qui joue Cocteau. Admiration et nostalgie.
