« Traduire la langue de Coeur ardent, c’est traduire une langue à la fois cassée, d’une énergie terrible dans sa violence et constamment inventive dans son désastre. » remarque André Markowicz, éminent traducteur. Le théâtre d’Ostrovski (1823-1886) témoigne en effet d’un regard acéré mêlé d’empathie sur le microcosme de la province russe saisie dans sa truculente médiocrité et sa violence ordinaire. Dans Cœur Ardent, l’auteur russe croque avec délice une communauté rurale de marchands russes. Entre comédie de mœurs et satire sociale, la pièce peint ce petit monde pétrifié dans la routine et la superstition, confit dans l’ennui et dans l’alcool, ignorant des profonds bouleversements qui le travaillent. Pour Christophe Rauck, « cette œuvre du répertoire russe classique est un formidable matériau de jeu et une source d’inspiration foisonnante pour un metteur en scène. » Il y voit un « véritable plaidoyer pour l’émancipation des femmes, des jeunes filles en particulier, soumises à leurs parents, à leurs devoirs, à la société tout entière. ». Une sombre histoire qu’il veut dessiner sur la scène du théâtre avec le noir du fusain, pour en souligner la profondeur…
