Le grand chef anglais retrouve l’Orchestre National de France, son partenaire berliozien de prédilection, avec lequel dès 1985 il abordait la Damnation de Faust (avec Jessye Norman), ou plus récemment, en juin dernier au Festival de Saint-Denis, le Requiem. « J’étais encore étudiant, je devais avoir vingt ou vingt-et-un ans lorsque j’ai entendu pour la première fois Roger Désormière diriger la seconde partie de L’Enfance du Christ, nous confie Colin Davis. Je n’avais alors jamais rien entendu de tel. J’étais fasciné. Par la suite j’ai entendu Thomas Beecham diriger Berlioz. J’ai assisté à son dernier concert, qui était précisément le Requiem, donné au Royal Albert Hall en 1959. Berlioz n’est jamais le même et j’aime chacune de ses œuvres pour elle-même. Béatrice et Bénédict, par exemple, est une œuvre lumineuse, très apaisée… ». Pour aborder cet opéra méconnu et mal aimé du public français, Sir Colin Davis bénéficiera d’une superbe distribution vocale (Joyce DiDonato, Nathalie Manfrino, Charles Workman, Jean-Philippe Lafont, etc…) au sein de laquelle on pourra distinguer le remarquable baryton québécois Jean-François Lapointe (dans le rôle de Claudio), dont ce sera la première grande apparition sur une scène parisienne.
