La plus grande qualité de cette mise en scène de Michael Thalheimer, c’est de montrer au plus près des corps, dans la représentation même de ces corps qui parlent et s’exposent, le combat qui se livre entre les personnages, mais aussi, et peut-être surtout, le tumulte à l’intérieur d’eux, à l’intérieur de leur immense solitude et inadaptation à la vie. Dans ce chantier d’une entreprise française en Afrique, où vivent le chef de chantier Horn, un vieil homme, et le jeune ingénieur Cal, arrive Léone, jeune parisienne qu’Horn a invitée afin de l’épouser. L’Africain Alboury a pénétré aussi sur le chantier malgré les gardes et réclame le corps de son frère mort mystérieusement la veille. Nous sommes au début de la nuit. Comment retranscrire sur la scène l’objectivité affolante et irrémédiable de l’Histoire, qui rejaillit sur la subjectivité des personnages apeurés ? Michel Thalheimer donne corps à cette dialectique. Lorsque le rideau se lève, on ressent la peur de la violence, la peur de la tragédie. De hauts murs sombres et un trou noir : lieu d’enfermement et de vertige, lieu dangereux et triste, où seule une absolue détresse s’exprime – la sexualité brutale et dégénérée de Cal et le whisky de Horn en constituent d’ailleurs des symptômes alarmants. En fond de scène, Albery : une rangée de dix hommes noirs dans la pénombre, une présence entêtée au langage clair et aux gestes mesurés, réclamant d’une seule voix le corps du défunt, et dont parfois s’extrait un comédien pour jouer Albery.
Peur fantasmée
Idée brillante et scéniquement très forte, l’homme noir devenant chœur accusateur dans l’espace public, et aussi incarnation de la peur fantasmée du blanc. Albery seul est dans une position juste et franche, tandis que Horn, Cal et Léone sont emprisonnés dans leur conscience malade. Le sujet de la pièce est selon le metteur en scène « la conscience européenne, nos angoisses, nos refoulements et notre culpabilité ». Koltès disait d’ailleurs que le texte ne parle pas de l’Afrique ou du néo-colonialisme, mais d’un lieu du monde métaphorique « d’un aspect de la vie ». D’où la nécessité d’une mise en scène capable de donner à voir ces territoires de l’inquiétude, au plus profond des êtres et de leur vérité. C’est ce qui advient ici. Léone, remarquablement interprétée par Cécile Coustillac, est terriblement émouvante, dans son incapacité à se protéger et dans son désir naïf d’une impossible renaissance. Stefan Konarske est un Cal impressionnant, instinctif, animal, nerveux, entièrement dominé par ses nerfs, un peu trop parfois dans l’éructation. Charles Nelson réussit à rendre Horn, toujours flanqué de sa bouteille d’alcool, infiniment touchant. Un spectacle remarquablement maîtrisé et abouti, à la fois percutant et sensible.
