Nous avons vu cette saison à la Colline Die Ratten (les Rats) de Hauptmann dans la mise en scène de Thalheimer, un piège scénographique fulgurant et efficace. Par ailleurs, Thalheimer et Koltès partagent une esthétique radicale dans la vision d’un monde sans illusions où l’utopie se fragilise alors que les rapports de force s’exacerbent. Pour Thalheimer, tout se joue dans la tête des trois personnages blancs, et l’action de Combat de nègre et de chiens pourrait se situer dans n’importe quel pays africain comme dans n’importe quelle banlieue de Paris. Le refoulement symbolise l’identité des Blancs face au peuple d’Afrique, le non-dit de la responsabilité de l’Europe dans la mise à sac du continent noir. Ce chantier désaffecté dirigé par des Blancs en perte de reconnaissance est une métaphore du statut de l’Europe « dont l’apogée est derrière elle … ». Aux côtés du personnage noir venu récupérer le corps de son frère mort sur le chantier, évolue un chœur d’acteurs, une foule anonyme et intensément présente d’une Afrique en éveil.
