Créé en 2018 au Théâtre de la Huchette, Comédiens !, adaptation libre de l’opéra Paillasse de Leoncavallo, est l’aboutissement d’une longue histoire de Samuel Sené avec ce grand classique du vérisme. Lorsque, en 2004, il mettait en scène cette mise en abyme du théâtre où le directeur de la troupe itinérante, mari jaloux, finit par confondre son rôle de clown trompé avec la vraie vie, jusqu’à tuer, à la fin de la représentation, son épouse infidèle, la réalité des tensions conjugales parmi les chanteurs avait fini par exploser jusqu’à blesser l’une des solistes ! Une quinzaine d’années plus tard, il a choisi de transposer l’intrigue dans le Paris de l’après-guerre, où dans un réalisme digne de l’époque de Carné et Aymé se joue un vaudeville imaginaire de la fin du dix-neuvième siècle, Au diable Vauvert. Ce glissement vers le drame est emmené par la partition de Raphaël Bancou.
Mises en abyme enlevées
On retrouve le musicien au piano dans Contre-temps. Créé à huis clos au Théâtre Hébertot pendant l’hiver 2020-2021, ce biopic consacré à François Courdot, un chef d’orchestre français d’opérette parti à la conquête de Broadway et tombé dans l’oubli, s’appuie sur un programme éclectique de plus d’une cinquantaine d’airs du répertoire « léger », agrémentés de quelques pages et arrangements de Courdot lui-même que l’on redécouvre en première mondiale. Sous l’apparence d’une conférence, les deux chanteuses du Trio Opaline ne se contentent pas de faire revivre le compositeur et son époque, avec un swing qui fait fi du clivage entre les genres. Pour Samuel Sené, le spectacle est « aussi une réflexion bien plus profonde sur la place de l’artiste créateur dans le paysage socio-politique, la fracture entre l’ambition d’un artiste et la réalité, et l’ouverture du débat sans fin sur la possible cohabitation entre divertissement et positionnement idéologique ».
