Contemporain de Puccini qui a fait carrière en Allemagne et développé une œuvre marquée par la tradition germanique, Busoni est surtout connu pour ses arrangements pour piano, en particulier d’œuvres de Bach, à l’instar de la Chaconne. Il a pourtant légué deux opus magistraux, trop rarement donnés, où il réinvente les formes établies : un opéra, Doktor Faust, laissé inachevé après sa mort, et sans doute l’un des avatars les plus longs du répertoire concertant, le Concerto pour piano et chœur d’hommes op. 39, créé en 1904. Si Beethoven a été le premier à introduire des parties chorales dans le genre avec la Fantaisie op.80, Busoni lui donne une ampleur inédite avec cette vaste fresque de soixante-dix minutes en cinq parties qui s’enchaînent sans interruption. Dans cette partition qui requiert un effectif imposant, Busoni réalise une synthèse entre les deux traditions qui traversent le genre concertant tout au long du XIXème siècle, la démonstration virtuose soliste et une conception plus symphonique illustrée dès Beethoven.
