La musique de Jean Sibelius (1865-1957), s’installe peu à peu dans les programmes symphoniques des orchestres français. Cela tient sans doute en partie à la présence régulière de chefs d’orchestre nordiques, qu’ils viennent de Finlande – comme Sakari Oramo et Jukka-Pekka Saraste – ou d’Estonie – comme le directeur musical de l’Orchestre de Paris, Paavo Järvi. Ce dernier, qui en 2004 avait débuté sa relation avec les musiciens parisiens dans la musique de scène pour Pelléas et Mélisande du compositeur finlandais, avait inauguré son mandat en septembre dernier avec Finlandia, un chef-d’œuvre de jeunesse rarement joué. Il dirige ce mois-ci (les 27 et 28 avril), la Cinquième Symphonie, l’une des plus souvent programmées, à la fois héroïque et contemplative, en conclusion d’un programme d’un bel éclectisme : transparence très debussyste des Trois danses op. 6 de Maurice Duruflé et vigueur romantique du Premier Concerto de Brahms (avec le pianiste Lars Vogt). Sakari Oramo avait lui aussi inscrit Sibelius (la Première Symphonie) au programme de son premier concert avec l’Orchestre de Paris, en 2000. Il débute cette fois (les 6 et 7 avril) avec Finlandia dans un programme roboratif (avec Gil Shaham en soliste du Concerto pour violon de William Walton et la Cinquième Symphonie de Prokofiev).
Un génie singulier
Au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, le 13 avril, Jukka-Pekka Saraste aborde avec l’Orchestre philharmonique de Rotterdam deux œuvres où s’exprime tout le génie singulier de Sibelius : le magnifique poème symphonique Luonnotar (avec la soprano Karita Mattila) et la Quatrième Symphonie, savantes constructions orchestrales où un simple ostinato des cordes suffit à créer l’envoûtement. Toujours avec Karita Mattila en soliste, le chef finlandais dirige la création française de la version orchestrale des Quatre instants (2002) de Kaija Saariaho ; il interprète également la Suite de danses de Bartók, l’un de ses autres compositeurs de prédilection.
