Depuis sa création en 1994, le Concours international de piano d’Orléans s’est fait une place à part dans le paysage musical français. À travers le prisme de la musique du xxe siècle (et désormais du xxie également), il a su révéler quelques belles personnalités musicales, parmi lesquels Fabio Grasso, Toros Can, Francesco Tristano Schlimé ou Wilhem Latchoumia. La plus récente lauréate, Florence Cioccolani, distinguée en 2008 à l’occasion de la huitième édition du concours, s’est d’ores et déjà révélée une artiste accomplie, qu’elle se consacre au répertoire contemporain (très convaincante dans les difficiles pièces d’Elliott Carter l’an dernier aux Bouffes du Nord) ou à des œuvres plus anciennes (elle a interprété Liszt au Musée d’Orsay). Pour le public, le Concours est, au-delà d’un parcours de sélection, une occasion rare d’entendre tout un panorama de la création pianistique du siècle écoulé. Les candidats ont en effet, dès la deuxième épreuve, toute latitude pour composer leurs récitals (de quarante à cinquante minutes) en réunissant des pièces de différentes époques, d’Albeniz à Bruno Mantovani en passant par Boucourechliev, Jolivet ou Ohana. La finale réunira les trois derniers candidats en lice autour des Préludes et fugues de Chostakovitch et d’une création de Philippe Hurel accompagnée par les Percussions de Strasbourg. Le jury, composé de pianistes et compositeurs, réunit notamment Michaël Levinas, Håkon Austbø, Émile Naoumoff ou Hidéki Nagano, lauréat de la première édition du concours.
