Marianne, spécialiste de physique quantique, rencontre Roland, apiculteur, à l’occasion d’un barbecue. Scénario apparemment banal : ils se rencontrent, s’aiment, se séparent et doivent assumer leurs choix face à l’adversité et notamment face à la maladie. Pourtant, comme le remarque Arnaud Anckaert, « la pièce échappe aux stéréotypes, en développant dans son écriture un système de scènes qui se répètent, en introduisant de subtiles variations de l’une à l’autre. » Le jeune dramaturge britannique Nick Payne questionne ainsi avec intelligence notre libre arbitre et nos visions du couple. Partant du principe qu’un même événement est susceptible de connaître plusieurs issues différentes, et qu’il suffit parfois d’une intonation pour que les choses prennent une tournure particulière, Constellations ouvre les portes d’un univers non linéaire, d’un « multivers », comme l’appelle Marianne, où toutes nos décisions coexistent au sein de l’ensemble des possibles parallèles.
