L’affaire date d’avril 2008. Une Autrichienne de 42 ans, Elisabeth Fritzl, accuse son père, Josef, de l’avoir violée, battue et séquestrée durant 24 ans. Elle révèle également que trois des sept enfants nés de ces viols incestueux sont restés enfermés avec elle, dans le sous-sol insonorisé de la maison familiale. Pour Markus Öhrn, « le cas Fritzl est un symptôme aussi monstrueux que grotesque de “l’amour romantique” sur lequel est fondé le modèle familial ». Un symptôme qui en révèle « le sombre revers », qui éclaire la « pulsion de possession exclusive et absolue »pouvant aller jusqu’à nier l’Autre comme sujet. Dégageant le terrible fait divers de tout sensationnalisme pour mieux en laisser suinter« l’inquiétante familiarité », Conte d’amour nous plonge dans un « espace flottant », un « cloaque expérimental » où effroi et hilarité se côtoient dangereusement. Coincés dans ce que le metteur en scène qualifie « d’antépurgatoire », quatre comédiens sont à la fois occultés par une bâche plastique et surexposés par deux caméras vidéo. Ils se livrent à des jeux de rôles volontairement régressifs, poussant les figures archétypales qu’ils composent jusqu’à « leur paroxysme bouffon ».
