C’est dans les pratiques populaires que Robin Orlyn aime à tailler la matière de ses propres pièces, pilonnant, à force d’inventivité joyeusement insolente, les clichés autocollants sur l’Afrique. « J’essaie de briser la vision dominante, parfois complaisante, d’une Afrique éternellement victime et d’en révéler la beauté, sans verser dans le voyeurisme colonial ni l’exotisme. » clame la chorégraphe d’origine sud-africaine. Elle puise ici dans le « coupé-décalé », mouvement culturel apparu au tournant des années 2000 en Côte d’Ivoire et dans la « JetSet », autre nom de la communauté ivoirienne vivant à Paris. Cette danse se mêle aux musiques urbaines et se décline en plusieurs versions dont le « zouk décalé » ou le « kuduro décalé ». En premier acte, Robyn Orlin a conçu un solo pour James Carlès, dont le titre s’enroule comme une banderole manifeste : I am not a sub-culture, rather a gallery of self-portraits with a history walking in circles. Le danseur et chorégraphe James Carlès répond par On va gâter le coin !, création pour cinq interprètes. Ce dialogue en deux actes s’annonce haut en couleurs et fort en rythmes…
