Un parcours de plus de trente ans : François Verret, qui signait ses premières pièces au début des années 1980 – Tabula rasa lui a notamment valu d’être primé au concours de Bagnolet –, continue de développer ses fascinants paysages chorégraphiques et scénographiques, et sa danse singulière, qui sait rassembler, en un même mouvement, l’absurde et le drame, la dérision et la dénonciation. Ce parcours d’artiste est aussi, inextricablement, un parcours de militant. En 1993, c’est François Verret qui crée les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers, affirmant la possibilité d’un espace d’échange et de recherche, résolument interdisciplinaire et résistant aux pratiques dominantes de production et de diffusion, de communication, d’accueil du public. Il mène également des ateliers en banlieue, organise des activités en milieu carcéral. C’est dire que la question de la rencontre et de la communauté est essentielle pour lui : toutes ses pièces sont marquées par un intense travail d’équipe, et posent un regard affûté sur la vie en société. Courts-Circuits, qui sera créé en Avignon, ne fait pas exception à la règle.
« Un temps et un lieu de pluie, de cendres, de presque nuit »…
C’est entouré de huit interprètes – danseurs, acteurs, musiciens, circassiens – et de nombreux autres collaborateurs (scénographie, images…) que le chorégraphe se lance dans cette nouvelle pièce. Comme souvent chez lui, la création prend sa source dans des textes. D’abord une phrase tirée d’un roman, dans lequel Don DeLillo évoque les attentats du 11 septembre 2001 : « Ce n’était plus une rue, mais un monde, un temps et un lieu de pluie, de cendres, de presque nuit » (L’Homme qui tombe)… Cette évocation d’un monde traumatisé et à jamais métamorphosé, François Verret la relie à une autre référence, issue d’un ouvrage du neurologue Oliver Sachs, L’Eveil, qui décrit une affection plongeant ses victimes dans la léthargie. L’atteinte est incurable. Seule une drogue violente peut les faire sortir de cet état, et les malades encourent alors le risque d’épisodes hallucinatoires et de délires paranoïaques. Cette situation étrange et effrayante devient, pour François Verret, matière à expérience : dans quel lieu ces hommes et ces femmes évoluent-ils ? Dans quel temps ? Sur scène, les interprètes questionnent ce point de non-retour, et la capacité de l’humanité à se (re)construire dans des conditions extrêmes. A l’heure où le monde s’accélère, où chacun est emporté dans un rythme et des exigences effrénés, que nous dit une telle maladie, qui met ses victimes « hors circuit » ?
