En 2013, Patrick Declerck se fait opérer, « à crâne ouvert », d’une tumeur au cerveau. En ligne de mire : la mort, la perte de mémoire, l’aphasie… De cette épreuve est né Crâne, le récit de sa propre opération à travers le personnage fictif d’Alexandre Nacht. En appui sur le roman, mais aussi sur la relation intime entretenue par la compagnie avec l’auteur, Antoine Laubin signe une mise en scène éclairante sur la capacité de l’humain à affronter l’innommable. Toute la pièce est concentrée sur le parcours médical du personnage, disséqué en trois temps : le diagnostic qui laisse d’abord peu d’espoir, revisité ensuite par les progrès de la médecine jusqu’à l’hospitalisation ; l’opération en elle-même de chirurgie dite « éveillée » ; et le retour à la vie. Chaque fois, un narrateur accompagne le personnage dans son épreuve, mettant une juste distance à ce qui, pour le spectateur, devient aussi une expérience sur le sens de la vie.
