Qu’est-ce qui vous attache ainsi à Genet ?
Cristèle Alves Meira : J’avais 21 ans quand j’ai monté Les Nègres, en me posant comme défi de démanteler l’écriture et la pensée de Genet. Je suis fascinée par cette beauté en creux dont parle Genet, par sa capacité à mélanger le merdique et le fleuri, par son obsession de l’identité, avec ses personnages qui font sans cesse tomber les masques. De plus son théâtre se projette vers un idéal qui n’existe pas. Quand Genet a monté ses pièces, c’était un échec. Du point de vue de l’incarnation dans le jeu, ses recommandations restent un mystère. Seul Fassbinder ou Grüber, il me semble, ont approché cet idéal.
Quelle place occupe Splendid’s dans son œuvre ?
C.A.M : C’est une œuvre de jeunesse très différente des Nègres par exemple. Un texte très critiqué, que Genet lui-même n’a pas voulu faire éditer. Il a la fraîcheur des premiers écrits, avec une glorification du mal et une cruauté extrême. S’y profilent déjà la beauté du traître et l’univers homosocial cher à l’auteur.

C’est le récit d’une prise d’otage ?
C.A.M : On y revisite l’imagerie de Genet. C’est une pièce inspirée des films noirs américains de l’époque, avec l’image d’une Amérique opulente. Sept bandits prennent en otage une riche américaine dans un hôtel. C’est un huis clos où l’on sent rapidement que les gangsters sont condamnés à mort. Ils ne s’entendent pas, vont se dévoiler les uns aux autres dans leurs désirs profonds et dans leur lâcheté. Finalement, pour eux, le danger vient plus de l’intérieur que de l’extérieur.
Et pour approcher l’idéal du théâtre de Genet ?
C.A.M : Dans Haute Surveillance, Genet écrit : « l’action se déroulera comme dans un rêve ». Nous jouerons donc sur une plateforme suspendue sur l’orchestre, dans un dispositif quadrifrontal qui, par la proximité qu’il provoque, nous rapprochera du cinéma. Pour nous l’action se passe dans un hôtel en terre arabe, où les médias parlent arabe, comme les policiers. L’insertion de la langue arabe dans ce mélange de lyrisme et d’argot de la langue de Genet produit un effet assez incroyable. A partir de cette intrigue simple, réaliste et efficace, il s’agira ensuite d’explorer la dimension métaphysique et d’interroger les rituels de mort.
