Commandée en 1945 par Serge Koussevitzky et créée en 1949 à Boston sous la direction de Leonard Bernstein, la Turangalîla-Symphonie de Messiaen est devenue un classique du répertoire. « Chant d’amour, hymne de joie, mouvement, rythme, vie et mort » selon la traduction des deux mots sanskrits juxtaposés dans son titre, cette fresque en dix mouvements autour du mythe de Tristan et Iseult convoque une palette orchestrale foisonnante, avec des alchimies de timbres et de couleurs originales, où les ondes Martenot occupent une place de choix. Mais le véritable instrument concertant reste le piano, pour lequel le compositeur a réservé des innovations qu’il avait développées dans ses deux grands cycles Vingt regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus et Visions de l’Amen, écrits dans les années quarante.
