La suppression de l’année du Mexique en France n’aura pas empêché le Châtelet d’ouvrir sa saison avec un opéra mariachi. C’est la première fois dans l’histoire de la musique que cette formation traditionnelle mexicaine (comprenant guitares, violons, trompettes, vihuelas…) se lance dans le genre lyrique. L’idée est venue de l’Opéra de Houston, une ville du Texas située non loin de la frontière avec le Mexique. Le directeur de cette structure, Anthony Freud, a commandé la musique à Jose Peppe Martinez, directeur musical de l’Orchestre Mariachi « Vargas de Tecalitlan », et le livret à Leonard Foglia, bien connu des habitués de Broadway. Cruzar la Cara de la luna, que l’on traduira par « de l’autre côté de la lune », aborde la question de l’identité à travers le destin d’une famille partagée entre les Etats-Unis et le Mexique. Une frontière sous haute tension, confrontée à l’immigration clandestine et au trafic de drogue. Reste à savoir si cet opéra abordera cette dimension politique ou s’il restera dans un folklorisme consensuel.
