On célébrera l’an prochain le centième anniversaire de la naissance de John Cage, le vingtième de sa disparition. Véritable icône de l’art américain, il symbolise quelques-unes des plus importantes aventures musicales du xxe siècle : introduction du hasard dans la composition et l’interprétation, ouverture vers les musiques extra-européennes, large place faite aux percussions, détournement du geste instrumental et création d’instruments ad hoc tel le « piano préparé ». À tel point que derrière l’image de l’inventeur se perd quelque peu l’œuvre. Le Festival d’automne a de longue date suivi l’œuvre du compositeur, le plus souvent à travers le prisme des musiques composées pour la Merce Cuningham Dance Company – excellent prisme au demeurant, puisqu’il élargit les recherches du musicien (sur l’impact dramaturgique du hasard, notamment) à d’autres domaines que la musique : la danse bien sûr, mais plus généralement la représentation. Très marqué par l’art de Marcel Duchamp, John Cage intègre toujours l’exécution musicale dans une sphère plus vaste : adepte du happening, précurseur de l’œuvre « multimédia », il fait de la musique un théâtre.
Saisissant portrait du compositeur
Certaines œuvres de John Cage sont devenues des « classiques » – des points de repères acceptés comme tels par la postérité. Le Festival d’Automne ne se contente pas de reprendre ces pages emblématiques, dont le succès a été augmenté par les enregistrements discographiques (Sonates et interludes pour piano préparé, Music of Changes, les différents quatuors à cordes…). Au contraire, après avoir présenté les Europeras 3 & 4 en 1990 – « collages musicaux » où la voix se confronte à deux pianos et six tourne-disques –, il donnait à voir et entendre en 1993, juste après la mort du compositeur, 103 pour grand orchestre accompagnant One11, un « film sans sujet » dont le déroulement, comme celui de la musique, découle de combinaisons aléatoires. Cette année, le Festival d’automne comble une étonnante lacune en proposant la première audition en France de la dernière œuvre achevée par le compositeur (Cité de la musique, 12 novembre). Seventy-four (pour orchestre de soixante-quatorze musiciens) laisse à la détermination des interprètes durée, modulations et modes de jeu. Ce faisant, cette œuvre testamentaire brosse un saisissant portrait du compositeur, s’effaçant derrière les circonstances et les aléas de l’interprétation.
L’interprète est maître du temps
Autre monument programmé (Palais Garnier, 19 novembre) : les Études australes, en quatre livres, quatre heures de musique, ici interprétées par deux pianistes qui furent les complices du compositeur : Frederic Rzewski et Stephen Drury. D’une extrême virtuosité, ces trente-deux études, ordonnées en complexité croissante, sont conçues comme autant de « duos pour deux mains indépendantes » où l’interprète est maître du temps (il n’y a pas de mesures) et de la dynamique. Car la virtuosité est paradoxalement très présente chez cet admirateur de Satie : Carolin Widmann ne dira pas le contraire, qui interprète (le 12 décembre) quelques-unes des Freeman Etudes pour violon entre quelques étonnantes pages chorales chantées par l’ensemble Exaudi.
