Inventeur avec Terry Riley du courant « minimaliste » au cours des années soixante, Steve Reich n’a jamais cessé de faire de la pulsation le cœur de son œuvre. Partition emblématique, Drumming (1970) est l’aboutissement des premiers travaux du compositeur sur le « déphasage » progressif d’un même motif rythmique. Music for Eighteen Musicians (1976) pousse plus loin la recherche harmonique : l’ambition expérimentale est dépassée au profit d’une musique plus complexe dans sa construction (superposition de pulsations immuables et de traits tenus, imprévisibles, par les voix, les vents et les cordes), plus séduisante par son résultat.
Etrange profondeur
À ces deux œuvres « classiques », les musiciens de l’Ensemble Modern, dirigés par le spécialiste de l’œuvre de Steve Reich, Brad Lubman, ajoutent la création française du Double Sextet (2008) où chacun des six instruments (flûte, clarinette, vibraphone, piano, violon et violoncelle) est doublé, créant une étrange profondeur. Le 18 octobre, Michel Tabachnik, à la tête du Chœur de la Radio flamande et du Brussels Philharmonic, interprète la longue « symphonie », d’allure souvent contemplative, qu’est The Desert Music (1984). Les 15 et 16 octobre, la chorégraphe Karine Saporta propose une nouvelle version de Notes, une interprétation de quelques pages magistrales de Steve Reich, dont It’s gonna rain (1965), point de départ de l’œuvre du compositeur, ou l’obsessionnel Different Trains (1988) pour quatuor et bande magnétique.
